Priorities

Greg is working hard in Olympia to pass bipartisan legislation

and secure resources to address Kitsap’s key priorities.

  • We're on pace for over 3,000 cancelled sailings this year. Folks across the state are hurting — missing work, missing school, and missing medical appointments.

That's why Greg introduced bipartisan legislation to right the ship at WSF.

Read Greg's Roadmap to Fix our Ferries article in Kitsap Sun to see how he's working with colleagues to deliver for neighbors in Kitsap and across the state.

Greg has been riding WSF since 1988. He will keep working hard so our ferries are still thriving for future generations.

  • In 1995, Greg joined 1st grade classmates on a shoreline litter cleanup. During 6th grade science class, Greg helped raise and release salmon eggs. The chum salmon now returning from the Pacific are 7th generation hatchlings. For Greg, these experiences have sparked a lifelong commitment to protect Puget Sound.

Greg now represents Kitsap on the Citizens Advisory Group for our region’s salmon recovery council. He’s recommended investing $3.4 million for habitat restoration and education projects, connecting youth with Puget Sound salmon.

Greg’s top priority as State Rep is to mobilize the next generation of conservationists to protect Puget Sound. We make that happen by investing in environmental education programs like hands-on habitat restoration projects and pollution reduction campaigns. Every Kitsap kid should have the opportunity to plant trees, remove invasive species, and foster eel grass and kelp forests. These efforts safeguard our environment now and for future generations.

  • Greg is a national leader in youth mental health. He advocates for funding cost-effective programs that deliver real results here in Kitsap. Train thousands of teachers, coaches, mentors, and youth in Mental Health First Aid. Expand Poulsbo Fire CARES across Kitsap to provide in-home and mobile services to individuals struggling with mental illness and substance use disorders. Help neighbors in need to boost public safety, better support first responders, and reduce strain on Kitsap homeless shelters and emergency rooms.

Kitsap mental health champions host a send-off party before Greg begins his Run Across America on April 25th 2022. He’ll be welcomed home three months later after running 3,156 miles from the Atlantic to the Pacific for youth mental health!

Kitsap Key Issues

  • Greg is a proud Kitsap K-12 public schools grad and is on a mission to pay it forward. In 2009, budget shortfalls hit school districts across the state. BISD announced layoffs cutting 17 teachers. The community sprang into action and Greg advised the Executive Director of the “Save our Teachers” campaign on outreach strategies. The grassroots effort raised over $200,000 to retain 7 laid-off teachers who “traded in their pink slips for paychecks.”

When it matters most, Greg has stepped up and delivered for Kitsap public schools.

As State Rep, he’ll fight for the investments our Public Schools need to thrive:

    • Fully fund Special Ed programs

    • Nutritious school lunches and school supplies so every Kitsap kid is ready to learn

    • Buses and bus drivers so every student can get to school safely

    • Mental Health counseling and resources for youth and educators

    • “Afterschool for All” extracurricular learning and enrichment opportunities to keep kids safe and connected

The grandson of an English teacher, and the son of a Special Ed teacher, Greg has devoted his career to strengthening public schools and making college more affordable so everyone has a fair shot at the American Dream.

Greg will deliver for Kitsap public schools.

  • Housing costs have spiraled out of control and too many families, veterans, and seniors are left without affordable housing. Greg has learned about the challenges and opportunities firsthand as a member of the Kitsap Affordable Housing Task Force. He will work for permit and zoning reform, community partnerships, and aligning private sector incentives to fast track construction because everyone deserves a place to call home.

  • Too many neighbors are left without quality healthcare that's affordable. The downsizing of Naval Hospital Bremerton leaves veterans with less reliable care. Women have few OBGYN providers and families have few pediatric options. The price of care climbs for seniors. We face a critical shortage of nurses, technicians, and at-home care professionals.

It's time to invest in our local healthcare system and staff by funding additional urgent care facilities and walk-in clinics across Kitsap, expanding local nursing and technician training programs, and increasing local oversight and accountability at St. Michael.

We must keep fighting for women's reproductive care, including enshrining the right to choose with an amendment to our state constitution.

  • Small Business creates jobs for our local economy and adds vibrancy to the Kitsap community. Let's continue investments in broadband, efficient low-cost utilities, and Olympic College program expansion to fuel job growth and boost tourism. Small Business can be big business in Kitsap.

  • Greg knows firsthand the importance of supporting seniors so folks can retire with dignity. His (beloved) 96-year-old Grandma Ruby lives independently thanks to Social Security and Medicare. His Mom was a Kitsap nursing home social worker for over 20 years so he knows compassionate care and healthy connections make all the difference. It's time to invest in senior housing and dedicated resources so seniors continue to thrive in the communities they call home.

  • We ask a lot of our veterans, firefighters, first responders, police officers, teachers, and nurses... many deal with stress, burnout, and cumulative PTSD in the line of duty. They have our back so we need to have theirs. It's time to invest in innovative solutions for mental health and wellness so our heroes have the peer-support and professional resources they need.

Greg speaks to the Woodward 8th grade class at Inspire Day 2023. His message: “Chase your dreams with a smile. Work hard, have fun, and be kind to yourself and others!”
